River of Abundance

Singapore River flows out to Marina Bay which resembles a “womb”. The focus of the painting is the centre of the “womb” that symbolises wealth, and prosperity. Junks and cargo ships are navigating to the mouth of Marina Bay to the Singapore River.

The history of Singapore River was a busy port that attracted many Chinese migrants from China to live and work along the Singapore River. Singapore was a fishing village and fish were found along the river. Fish symbolises wealth and prosperity, and this relates positively to a woman’s womb with reference to the ovaries. Both ‘ovaries” are represented by bowls of fish to connect wealth, prosperity, and fertility.

The colourful grid background with lines and patterns connotes the warehouses, cargo boxes, and cramped living quarters of these migrants who worked along the Singapore River.
